Ararat is a picturesque township which attracts new residents with its great location, nestled at the foot of the Great Dividing Range at Mount Langi Ghiran (Aboriginal for 'Home of the Black Cockatoo'), and gateway to the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park.
The Ararat Retirement Village was established in 1970 as a community-based, not-for-profit organisation. The organisation was founded by the community after they identified that there was a real need for affordable housing for their aged population.
Situated in the Rural City of Ararat, our purpose continues to be to provide quality aged care services for older people. Recognising that people’s needs vary, we combine independent living with a co-located residential care facility.
In 2004, the residential care section was rebuilt and expanded from 49 to 60 beds.
New units were then completed in 2009 and now total 38.
The redevelopment allowed for the co-located previous Gorrinn House Hostel, to be upgraded and converted, into what is now known as the William Bryant Community Centre.
A generous bequest from the Late Mr William Bryant, was pivotal to the new centre and allowed us to give a community space to our Independent Living Unit residents as well as a fully appointed function centre.
In 2014, the "Ararat Retirement Village" underwent rebranding and a change of name saw Gorrinn Village become the new chosen moniker.
The introduction of 'ageing in place' across the Village means that people don't have to relocate again when their needs progress. As time moves on, some additional services can be accessed by units, until such time as residential care becomes the only option. It is then that residents are given the opportunity to move into the Nursing Home facility, formerly what was called "The Hostel". This makes for minimal upheaval in one's life.
NB: You do not need to be a resident of our units in order to access the services at Gorrinn Village - if you are in need of residential care, or know someone who is, you are welcome to drop in, or give us a ring to put your name on our waiting list.
Gorrinn Village has a commitment to quality care with a focus on palliative care that is ever expanding. With an increasing need for higher level care, we employ a range of immeasurably skilled staff including Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and Personal Care staff, as well as kitchen, activities, environmental services, administration, gardening and maintenance staff.
We also import or employ specialised staff where needed such as allied health and a hairdresser.
Gorrinn Village has vast potential for growth and is continually looking to the future, with the maintenance of quality care being our priority for the ageing residents of the town.
In July 2019, construction began of a new car park to accommodate the growing needs of the Village, in order to commence construction of a new 15 bed wing. The previous location of the staff and visitor's car park will be the site on which the new construction will begin.
This project will mean a number of departments such as kitchen, laundry and some of the offices will be relocated during the new build. The car park was completed in October 2019.
In March 2020, the 50th Anniversary Year of Gorrinn Village, we were forced to place plans for celebration, as well as the construction of our new beds, and existing renovations on hold, to support our residents through the Covid19 pandemic.
This meant placing the facility into an unprecedented "lock-down" and a leading innovative response from Gorrinn Village to exclude all visitors to residents, in order to avoid a possible outbreak.
In the weeks that followed, "window visits" were trialed, but as the weather got colder, this idea was scraped in favour of a purpose-built visiting screen, constructed to allow us to turn our front door "air lock" into a resident visiting area, in order to allow face-to-face interactions for residents and their loved ones, whist adequately protecting the resident from infection risk.
As the Covid19 pandemic went on, more and more innovative solutions were trialed in order to keep the virus out, but allow residents to have more visits and thus, contact with their loved ones. We used iPads for video calls, the easy-clean Hairdressing Salon, a purpose build concertina door to the Ivy Wing Sitting Area, and eventually resident's rooms, to facilitate visits.
Once vaccinations began in 2021, we could be a little looser with our visits, allowing family members who are vaccinated, to visit with residents in their rooms, providing they could present a negative Rapid-Antigen Test.
Both Residents and Representatives were very supportive of the measures we put in place and we managed to avoid any kind of outbreak until May 2022.
During 2021, works finally began on Stage 1 of our scheduled building works, relocating the Kitchen and Laundry.
Although held up by an extended La Nina wet season and ongoing various Covid19 issues, Stage 1 is scheduled to be completed in April 2023.
